BOSTON ARTS REVIEW
COMPANY BIO
Founded by Merli V. Guerra and Kimberleigh A. Holman in Boston, MA (2010), and launching its satellite company in Princeton, NJ (2017), Luminarium Dance Company was an award-winning 501(c)(3) non-profit contemporary dance company that was regularly hailed for its unique combination of dance and illumination. Luminarium’s mission was two-fold, stemming from the word “luminary” (n. 1. a body that gives off light 2. sheds light on some subject or enlightens mankind). Luminarium was proud to present professional annual dance productions alongside its yearly community outreach programming. The company's 24-Hour ChoreoFest, PLACE Project (formerly the "Cultural Community Outreach Project"), Arts in Action Project, and DANCE+ Series, challenged the limits of dance while enriching community: Giving choreographers a creative overnight outlet; using dance to highlight local historic and cultural landmarks; and offering underserved youth the chance to merge dance with other fields such as science, music, technology, and light. The company was regularly commissioned to create new choreographic works and performance installations—for venues ranging from gardens and art walks to opening act performances for TEDxCambridge (Boston Opera House) and the Rosoff Awards (The State Room)—and presented its works at hundreds of events across the U.S.; and abroad in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. After serving both the New England and Mid-Atlantic regions for 14 years, Luminarium completed its final season in 2024 to allow its two artistic directors to expand their own respective projects.
