DECEMBER 13, 2019 - Merli V. Guerra's latest dance film, For you, to mentor me, made its international debut just one week after its world premiere in Boston, MA, traveling to the IMAJITARI International Dance Film Festival in Indonesia.

DECEMBER 6 & 7, 2019 - Hailed by the Boston Globe as “unpredictable, provocative, and gratifyingly visceral,” Luminarium Dance Company triumphantly ended its 2019 Season with a melding of contemporary, Odissi, and unique lighting that catapulted live performance to a whole new level. Audiences ventured into Luminarium’s world of movement and light where fanciful animals were brought to life through shadow-play; witnessed the exhilaration of combat sport beyond the ring; sank into the luscious imagery of a new screendance film; and delighted in an amusing and provocative examination of "self," all in a night’s work.

TEMPEST RECONFIGURED BOSTON MA

OCTOBER 5, NOVEMBER 7 & 14, 2019 - The partners and Fort Point Theatre Channel present a collection of short works drawing inspiration from Shakespeare's The Tempest. Topics include colonialism, gender stereotypes, and immigration, as told through a mix of art forms. Heralding the art of dance, Luminarium Dance Company presents a new work by Artistic Director Kim Holman combining light and movement, highlighting themes of "magic and spectacle" found in the original play.

WOMEN IN DANCE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE PHILADELPHIA PA

OCTOBER 18 & 19, 2019 - The Women in Dance Leadership Conference was first held in Baton Rouge, LA, (2015) and NYC (2018), presenting "innovative and multicultural dance work to celebrate, develop, and promote women’s leadership in dance making, dance related fields, and other male dominated professions." Luminarium Artistic Director Merli V. Guerra was selected as one of 16 filmmakers worldwide to show two of her screendance films at this prestigious event, including Luminarium film The One I Keep, starring company member Jess Chang.

ARTBEAT FESTIVAL SOMERVILLE THEATRE, SOMERVILLE MA

​

SATURDAY, JULY 13, 2019 - Somerville Arts Council presented its annual ArtBeat Festival in Davis Square, Somerville, MA, featuring Luminarium's new work 8.7 million minus 1, by Artistic Director Merli V. Guerra, at the Somerville Theatre. The work integrates classical Odissi Indian dance, modern, and shadow theatre to literally and metaphorically illuminate the effects of human waste and pollution on the planet’s ecosystems. Incorporating found sound and spoken poetry by Guerra, the work aims to remind each of us of our direct impacts on the problem, and the habits we can change in our daily routines to do our part.

IGNITE: BIRTHDAY PERFORMANCE GREEN STREET STUDIOS

SUNDAY, JUNE 23, 2019 - Luminarium celebrated its 2019 birthday with IGNITE—an evening-length performance with drinks, cake, finger foods, silent auction, and raffle. Viewers were additionally treated to site-specific works throughout the building before the show and during intermission, all while enjoying a full production featuring fresh new works by Luminarium Directors Merli V. Guerra and Kimberleigh A. Holman, and 24-Hour ChoreoFest 2019 participants Colleen Cecchi, Nick M Daniels / The DANA Movement Ensemble, Alexander Davis, Emma Morris, and Kelsey Saulnier. GLOBAL WATER DANCES: NORTH WATSON PARK, MERRIMACK NH

​

SATURDAY, JUNE 15, 2019 - Funded by New England Grassroots Environment Fund and co-sponsored by Citizens for Clean Water, Artistic Director Kim Holman created an afternoon of advocacy for safe water through a performance for Global Water Dances 2019. Audiences joined guest speakers and the company as they performed new work to shed light on the Merrimack community's water contamination issue through human impact stories and site-specific movement.

GLOBAL WATER DANCES: SOUTH LAKE MERCER, WEST WINDSOR NJ

​

SATURDAY, JUNE 15, 2019 - Merli V. Guerra and Luminarium's Satellite Company presented new site-specific work as part of Global Water Dances' 2019 worldwide event, on the heels of Guerra's recent work 8.7 million minus 1, which prompts viewers to reconsider their own habits of pollution and human consumption. This migratory performance installation took place along the edges of Lake Mercer in Mercer County Park from 3-4pm.

JUNE 21 THROUGH JUNE 22, 2019 - Luminarium's ChoreoFest
returned after a two-year hiatus with choreographers from Pittsburgh, PA; Atlanta, Georgia; and New England creating brand new work overnight! This year's event featured esteemed choreographers 
Colleen Cecchi Walsh, Nick M Daniels / The DANA Movement Ensemble, Alexander Davis, Emma Morris, and Kelsey Saulnier, with performances of the new work shown at Luminarium's performance IGNITE. Co-sponsored by Green Street Studios and Monkeyhouse.

LEAP-TWIST-TURN 3S ARTSPACE, PORTSMOUTH NH

​

FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 2019 - Once more, Luminarium joined visual artist Adria Arch at 3S Artspace in Portsmouth, NH, for a physical exploration of her installation work. Dancers Jessica Chang and Jennifer Roberts inhabited Arch's hybrid paintings on the evening of June 7, working off of their playful sense of real-life animation, and drawing viewers deeper into the work.

VERDANT VIBES PROVIDENCE RI

FRIDAY, MAY 17, 2019 - Kimberleigh Holman brought three new works to life with live music as part of Verdant Vibes' Spring Festival. With music ranging from string quintet to experimental electronics, the new dance works performed by Jessica Chang, Devon Colton, Amy Mastrangelo, Katie McGrail, Alison McHorney, and Jennifer Roberts, spanned narrative quirk to live-time light installation. Verdant Vibes is a new music ensemble and concert series based in Providence, RI, that brings together artists and musicians creating new work in a variety of genres and media, acoustic and electronic.

VIDEOSKIN THE EDGE GALLERY, YUKON, CANADA

NOVEMBER 2-27, 2018 - Merli V. Guerra's film The One I Keep featuring company member Jess Chang once again traveled abroad when it was selected for screening as part of ViDEOSKiN Contemporary Dance Video Works. The film was presented at The Edge Gallery in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, with showings every Saturday in November.

PINE MANOR ARTS FEST HESS GALLERY, CHESTNUT HILL MA

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2018 - Luminarium Artistic Director Kim Holman and company members Jennifer Roberts, Katie McGrail, and Jess Chang continued their collaboration with visual artist Adria Arch and musician Alex Matheson to populate Arch’s large hanging hybrid paintings. Titled Do I Make You Happy?, the performance was a participatory exploration of people-pleasing, entertaining, and fixing, and what extra baggage women might carry in regards to these ideas, woven throughout the visual art. The work debuted at Pine Manor College's Arts Fest.

SEPTEMBER 29, 2018 - Under the direction of Artistic Director Merli V. Guerra, Luminarium's satellite company (based in Princeton, NJ) made its official debut, performing repertory favorite The Hostess Diaries at Liberty Hall Dance Festival. Co-presented by Buggé Ballet and Liberty Hall Museum at Kean University, Liberty Hall Dance Festival invited viewers to walk along the beautiful museum grounds, while enjoying site-specific professional dance performances inspired by moments in history.

HIVELAND MULTICULTURAL ARTS CENTER, CAMBRIDGE MA

SEPTEMBER 21, 22, 28, 29, 2018 - Hailed as one of “the most intelligent and innovative dance troupes in Boston,” Luminarium Dance Company returned after a two-year creation period with its feature production HIVELAND. Audiences were submerged inside the dreamlike world of HIVELAND’s athletic and weightless performers as they journeyed through a portal beyond the hive colony into the unknown, while composer Christos Zevos set the pace with a driving electronic score.

LDC IN CONCERT CLERMONT HISTORIC SITE, GERMANTOWN NY

​

AUGUST 4, 2018 - Luminarium Dance Company presented a family-friendly performance on the beautiful Clermont Historic Site grounds in upstate New York, featuring two newly commissioned works: one setting into motion the real-life story of Clermont historic figure Nancy Shippen; the other examining the effect of legacy on industry in the Hudson River Valley. These two new works (Guerra's Trinkets and Holman's Intersections, respectively) were performed alongside excerpts from the company's pending feature production HIVELAND and repertory (and historically-inspired) favorite The Hostess Diaries. The program was sponsored in part by a Humanities New York Action Grant.

APRIL 19, 2018 - Luminarium's film The One I Keep (featuring company member Jess Chang) was selected for viewing at the First Take Shorts Series. Held to the The County Theater in Doylestown, PA, the evening featured 12 shorts by Greater Philadelphia filmmakers, ending with a Q&A that included the only female filmmaker in attendance, and Luminarium Artistic Director, Merli V. Guerra.

COLLABORATION WITH PAINTER ADRIA ARCH NEWTON MA

​

APRIL 7 & 8, 2018 - Viewers ventured inside a living, breathing painting, as Luminarium Dance Company collaborated with award-winning artist Adria Arch during Newton Open Studios. Company member Jennifer Roberts performed a series of improvisational solos, dancing among Arch's new work Dept. of the Interior, a "hybrid painting" on paper comprised of cut out abstract elements suspended from the ceiling and walls. Performances were held at Arch's studio, accompanied by musician Alexander Matheson.

FEBRUARY 3, 2018 - In February 2018, Artistic Director Kimberleigh A. Holman presented her MFA thesis Bodies in Space. Accompanying the presentation, company members Melenie Diarbekirian and Katie McGrail traveled to Goddard College to perform Holman's Between Words & Space, encircled by their audience in the college's historic Haybarn Theatre. Holman now holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts, Performance Creation.

FEATURE PRODUCTION INFORMAL SHOWING CAMBRIDGE MA

DECEMBER 2, 2017 - Luminarium hosted an informal showing of the work done thus far on its 2018 Feature Production at Green Street Studios (Cambridge MA). Viewers stepped into the company's rehearsal space to see what would happen after 2016's TEDx characters leapt towards the alluring red circle, and watched as their relationships began to unfold for better or worse. Many stayed after the showing to chat with directors and dancers about the work in progress, and offer constructive insights of their own.

OUTLET DANCE PROJECT HAMILTON NJ

OCTOBER 7, 2017 - Luminarium made its official New Jersey debut at the beautiful Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton NJ. The Outlet Dance Project invited Luminarium Artistic Director Merli V. Guerra to present a new duet, created in relation to Linda Cunningham's striking bronze sculpture War Memorial III. The new work, Weathered, used 1970s CBS Vietnam newscasts as a sound score, creating a powerful and moving outdoor performance.

AUGUST 31, 2017 - Luminarium returned to Wiscasset, ME, for the art- and music-filled Wiscasset Art Walk. Passersby were encouraged to join the company as its dancers wander the town's coastal galleries, cafes, and artisanal shops.

NATICK ARTWALK NATICK MA

JULY 20, 2017 - Luminarium enjoyed performing at Natick Center Cultural District's 2017 ArtWalk—downtown's largest summer arts festival, celebrating its 10th season. More than 50 artists were stationed outside local businesses and studios to share their work with the public during the ArtWalk, while Luminarium's company members performed through the streets.

JUNE 2017 - Luminarium was thrilled to partner with the Italian Home for Children for its annual youth program. The company developed a summer class series for participants with sensory processing issues to utilize dance for therapy and expression.

MAY 23, 2017 - Luminarium felt honored when approached with a commission to create new work for the opening of the 21st Annual Rosoff Awards. Held in The State Room in Boston, The Rosoff Awards celebrate companies, individuals, and 20-somethings who are leading the way for change in their organizations. Luminarium debuted a new piece at the event, centered around the concepts of diversity, inclusion, and unity, set against The State Room's stunning view of the Boston skyline.

KINETIC CRAFT FULLER CRAFT MUSEUM, BROCKTON MA

​

APRIL SCHOOL VACATION 2017: APRIL 18-23, 10AM-5PM - For its 2017 Cultural Community Outreach Project (at the time, in its 6th year), Luminarium was in residence at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton for the entire week of April school vacation (Daily, 10am-5pm Tuesday, April 18 through Sunday, April 23, 2017). The company painstakingly constructed a series of “breathing installations”—a concept first developed back in 2011 with Luminarium’s fabric installation at the Boston Center for the Arts’ Movement at the Mills—highlighting the five crafting elements: Textiles, Ceramics, Wood, Glass, and Metal. The museum's 471 visitors that week perused the museum at their leisure as dancers from each installation performed and interacted with those passing by. Engaging for all ages, this event was free with museum admission.

BOSTON NEW MUSIC INITIATIVE SOMERVILLE MA

APRIL 22, 2017 - Luminarium was commissioned to create two new works to contemporary chamber music selected as part of Boston New Music Initiative’s international call for scores. Both music and dance were performed live in Ars Nexa Tempora at the Center for Arts at the Armory, resulting in an exciting spring concert collaboration.

MARCH 11, 2017 - Aurora Borealis Dance Company's Spring concert Mad World featured Luminarium Dance Company and BoSoma Dance Company as its annual professional Guest Artists, specifically requesting Guerra's acclaimed duet from Phoenixial Cycle.

JANUARY 28, 2017 - Luminarium made a guest appearance at this culturally- and politically-important event sponsored by Wanderlost—a gathering of musicians, poets, and dancers under 30 to protect and further LGBTQ rights. All proceeds went directly to BAGLY, the Boston Alliance for Gay & Lesbian Youth.

JANUARY 7, 2017 - Luminarium was honored to present its work at the 60th anniversary APAP | NYC 2017—the members conference of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters and the world’s premiere gathering of performing arts professionals. More than 3,600 presenting organizations, artists, managers, agents, support organizations, vendors, consultants, speakers and arts leaders from all 50 U.S. states and more than 33 countries attended this annual event, and Luminarium joined them, presenting Holman's Between Words and Space as part of Tracks // Where Will Dance Take You on January 7th at the Gibney Dance Choreographic Center.

PORTAL: STORIES FROM THE EDGE BOSTON UNIVERSITY

 

NOVEMBER 11 & 12 - Luminarium returned to the beautiful Boston University Dance Theater for its mainstage production of 2016. Audiences ventured through Portal, Luminarium’s 2016 Season feature production, igniting the company’s signature imaginative choreography and theatricality. Portal: Stories from the Edge proffered an evening of vibrant storytelling and experience that provided entry to five unique worlds of dance. Debuting just days after the unexpected results of the 2016 presidential election, Portal became an opportunity for the Greater Boston community to gather in a safe space, while discussing the topics of human connection and history repeating itself which were prevalent in the work onstage.

SHORT TO THE POINT INT. FILM FESTIVAL BUCHAREST ROMANIA

​

FALL 2016 - Kim Holman's film Garden—a collaboration with musical artist Jaggery—was shown as part of SHORT to the Point International Film Festival in Bucharest, Romania, in Fall 2016. The artistic music video featured Luminarium company members Jess Chang, Melenie Diarbekirian, Merli V. Guerra, Katie McGrail, and Alison McHorney.

ONE MINUTE SOLOS MOBIUS, CAMBRIDGE MA

 

SEPTEMBER 24 - Luminarium's Kim Holman and Alison McHorney each performed to packed audiences at Mobius's evening of One Minute Solos. Holman presented a 60-second version of her recent 60-minute collaborative work, while McHorney previewed Merli V. Guerra's The Grass Never Grows, performing a pivotal solo from the new work which later debuted in full at Portal.

24-HOUR CHOREOFEST DANCE COMPLEX, CAMBRIDGE MA

 

SEPTEMBER 9-10 - Each season, Luminarium presents America's only 24-hour choreography festival. Viewers ventured online at 8pm on Friday, September 9th for the overnight creation period live stream, allowing them to peek into all six studios as the choreographers made new work overnight. 2016 Participants Include: Boston Community Dance Project, Bridges Dance Theatre, Emily Jerant-Hendrickson, Luminarium Dance, Monkeyhouse, and Nozama Dance Collective. All profits from Saturday's culminating concerts went towards Luminarium's 2017 youth outreach programming.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 25 - Luminarium returned to Wiscasset, ME, for the art- and music-filled Wiscasset Art Walk. Passersby were encouraged to join the company as its dancers wandered the town's coastal galleries, cafes, and artisanal shops.

MONDAY, AUGUST 8 - Luminarium was invited to perform its ever-popular solo Andromeda at Paradise Lost's inaugural More than Moves Festival, raising funds for Transition House.

FRIDAY, JULY 29 - Luminarium added its monochromatic trio Getting There is Half the Battle to Jaggery's ORG: Black & White Ball, while guests donned their best black-and-white apparel.

300 YEARS WAYSIDE INN, SUDBURY MA

 

SUNDAY, JULY 24 - Thanks to a grant from the Sudbury Cultural Council, Luminarium presented its annual Cultural Community Outreach Project at Longfellow's Wayside Inn in Sudbury, MA, this summer as the inn celebrated its 300th year. The company performed outdoors on the Wayside's grounds in front of its beautiful grist mill, while viewers of all ages picnicked on the grass. Live music for voice and cello, composed by Mali Sastri of the band Jaggery, accompanied the dancers, and a new film incorporating dance and flour graced the large stone walls of the mill.

TUESDAY, JULY 19 - Luminarium returned to this year's Summer in the City series, presenting an outdoor dance performance/class combo that was fun, family-friendly, and encouraging of child participation,  and included performances of three fan-favorite works under the sun.

TEDxCAMBRIDGE BOSTON OPERA HOUSE, BOSTON MA

 

THURSDAY, JUNE 9 - In February 2016, Luminarium was commissioned to create a new work as the sole opening act for the prestigious TEDxCambridge, performing in one of Boston's most noteworthy theaters (and home of Boston Ballet), the Boston Opera House. The new work, co-choreographed by Guerra and Holman, featured the full company, along with imagery projected across a 50-foot screen created by animation artist Samo. The event was the single largest TED Talks event in the world, with an audience of 2,600. Luminarium was honored and humbled to have been hand-selected for this position from the wealth of options comprising Boston's vibrant performing arts scene.

OUT METROWEST FRAMINGHAM, NEWTON, WELLESLEY MA

APRIL 11 & MAY 25 - Luminarium's Arts in Action project is an annual initiative that strives to bring custom performing arts experiences to youth in need, for free. In the spring of 2016, we brought our annual project to OUT MetroWest, a service organization for LGBTQ middle and high school students providing programming, education and advocacy. We created workshops based on the criteria that the content was beneficial to the teens—in this case focusing on trust-building, storytelling, and physical expression. The experience was powerful for all, giving 50 enthusiastic and brave participants an outlet to utilize dance as an expressive tool with which to share their stories.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26 - Luminarium performed to rave reviews at the first-ever Winter Arts Fusical, hosted by The Arts Fuse.

 

 

LCC 2016 STATEWIDE ASSEMBLY STATE HOUSE, BOSTON MA

 

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10 - On Wednesday, February 10, 2016, Luminarium had the honor of performing in one of the most important buildings in Massachusetts: The State House. The company presented its work at the Local Cultural Council (LCC) 2016 Statewide Assembly, celebrating the LCC program. As a regular recipient of LCC grants, and a 2015 winner of the Massachusetts Cultural Council's (MCC) Gold Star Award, Luminarium was invited by the MCC to join its staff and prominent state legislators at the State House in Boston for this private biennual event. LCC volunteers from across the Commonwealth gathered at the capitol to explore arts and culture beyond their individual perspectives, connecting with community leaders and legislators to discuss the impact of projects that build creative communities through the arts. Luminarium Artistic Director Merli V. Guerra was additionally invited by the MCC to speak on a panel at the event alongside distinguished arts colleagues Ben Taylor (musician), Scarlet Keys (Associate Professor, Berklee College of Music), and keynote speaker Sally Taylor (musician and founder of Consenses). RETURN TO ORG! OBERON, CAMBRIDGE MA

 

THURSDAY, JANUARY 7 - After a two year hiatus, ORG—the multi-performer, multimedia variety show bringing together local (and beyond) performing and visual artists—returned to Oberon in full tilt. Return to Org! was a wholly locally grown affair, with Boston-based performers filling both acts. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5 - Each season, Luminarium locks local companies into Cambridge's historic Dance Complex overnight to create adrenaline-charged new works, shown the following day (Saturday, September 5) in two professional matinee shows. For 2015, Luminarium, Monkeyhouse, and Paradise Lost joined forces to create an epic new work, alongside fellow choreographers and companies Impact Dance Company; Nicole Laliberte; Jennifer Roberts and Jess Chang; Ryan P. Casey; and OnStage Dance Company.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 27 - Luminarium returned to Wiscasset, ME, for the art- and music-filled Wiscasset Art Walk. Passersby joined the company as its dancers wandered the coastal galleries, cafes, and artisanal shops.

SUMMER COSPLAY CELEBRATION SOMERVILLE MA

 

AUGUST 1 - For this video game-inspired event, Luminarium presented Accelero—a combination of technology and choreography, with the results projected onto a screen behind the dancers. The custom interface was designed specifically for this new collaborative work, with choreographer Merli V. Guerra and media designer John Guerra, who found a way to communicate between a wii remote’s accelerometer and the Unity game engine to translate the dancers’ movements into visual display. The end result was an explosive duet onstage and onscreen that received cheers from the crowd.

SUNDAY, JUNE 21 - Supporters and company celebrated Luminarium's five impressive years in the Boston dance community at its largest Gala & Showcase to date. The company formally received its 2015 Gold Star Award from the Massachusetts Cultural Council for its 2014 project Night at the Tower. With food, auctions, raffles, cash bar, guest speeches, and live performances by the company, this was a summer evening to remember.

As an added treat for children, Luminarium introduced a new class to its DANCE+ Series: DANCE+Bugs! Participants wriggled, wiggled, crawled, and flew in this fun new program, commissioned by the Eric Carle Museum.

MAY 30 - Calamity Co. Dance teamed up with the Somerville Arts Council to put together its second Dance Museum, this one in Union Square as part of the UnionArts initiative. MAY 16 - A free evening for families with children with a visual impairment, Especially for Me! offered visitors of all ages an opportunity to interact with museum exhibits along with a special version of Luminarium's DANCE+Technology class. Participants could hear when then twirled, jumped, or simply lifted an arm as Aristic Directors Merli V. Guerra and Kimberleigh A. Holman guided them through a series of movement exercises through a light sensor installation that triggers an array of musical chords and melodies created by Ed Bokhour.

SHINE THE LIGHT FESTIVAL TEMPLE SHALOM, NEWTON MA

 

DECEMBER 14 - Inspired by the beautiful stained glass windows in Temple Shalom's sanctuary in Newton, the The Open Your Eyes Fund brought to Newton a series of explorations designed to discover the beauty and power of light. Beginning in the spring of 2014 with a special tour at the Museum of Fine Arts, Temple Shalom offered an array of opportunities for members of all ages to learn about and experience the power of light. The series culminated with the Shine the Light Festival, featuring a class and performance by Luminarium Dance, alongside other local artists in this celebration of the arts and the power of light in December 2014.

DECEMBER 10 - Luminarium was thrilled to be a part of the grand unveiling of Trill, a new performing arts app and website that features the best of live performance, hand-picked by curators in each field. THE SLEEPRUNNER MULTICULTURAL ARTS CENTER

 

DECEMBER 5, 6, 12, 13 - Luminarium’s largest production of the 2014 Season kicked off with one full and three sold-out shows during its two-weekend debut run in the Boston region. The production took place at the beautiful and historic Multicultural Arts Center, highlighting the company's signature imaginative choreography, lighting, and scenic design, while complementing the caliber of its past feature productions Mythos:Pathos (2012) and Secrets & Motion (2013).

 

 

NIGHT AT THE TOWER PARK CIRCLE, ARLINGTON MA

 

SEPTEMBER 7 - Thanks to grants from the Arlington Cultural Council and Bob Jolly Charitable Trust, Luminarium Dance Company debuted a one-night-only evening of dance, art, and 60-foot high video projections held at the historic water tower of Arlington Heights (Arlington MA). Free and open to all ages, Night at the Tower turned Arlington's water tower into a breathing work of art, while accentuating the wondrous architecture of this historic local landmark.

AUGUST 28 - If ever you have the opportunity, take a stroll through Wiscasset Village during one of its summer art walks and enjoy the festive atmosphere. Blue and green balloons bob from store fronts on either side of Main Street. Wonderful sights, sounds, and pleasant surprises await you. Park your car and follow the balloons into the art galleries, artists’ studios, unique boutiques, antique shops, coffee shops, restaurants, and historic sites along Main Street. An added treat: Musicians can be found playing in various galleries, and new in 2014, Luminarium Dance Company performed a traveling new work through the streets, galleries, and piers of this beautiful town. AUGUST 16 - Luminarium was happy to join Art City Cambridge's inaugural Dance Museum, performing outdoors in Harvard Square at Winthrop Park. The company performed an excerpt from its newest work, followed by an hour of interactive improv games around the park.

 

 

24-HOUR CHOREOFEST DANCE COMPLEX, CAMBRIDGE MA

 

AUGUST 9 - Year three of this crazy overnight festival showcased Boston’s bravest choreographers and companies at the Dance Complex, Cambridge MA. This all-night festival began at 8pm Friday, August 8th, with a live video feed of the creative process unfolding online overnight for the community's viewing pleasure. Public performances featuring the new works took place the following day on Saturday, August 9 at 2pm and 4pm. Our 2014 participants embodied a thrilling variety of styles ranging from burlesque to Vaudeville, and contemporary to Jamaican folk dance, including Vanessa White with Lipstick Criminals, Karen Krolak with Monkeyhouse, Moving Target (led by Sarah Mae Gibbons), Stefanie D. Belnavis, CHIFFEROBE's TropiGals, and of course, Luminarium Dance Company.

 

 

NATIONAL DANCE DAY HYDE PARK BRANCH LIBRARY

 

JULY 26 - Luminarium Dance Company offered a free hour-long workshop to celebrate National Dance Day. Artistic Directors Merli V. Guerra and Kimberleigh A. Holman led a class that merged dance and movement with hands-on lighting elements. Kids moved their bodies while experimenting with light; from handheld to projectors!  The class took place in Weld Hall, at the Hyde Park Branch of the Boston Public Library, geared towards ages 6-12. This event was co-sponsored by Luminarium Dance and Artists-at-Large, Inc.

JULY 19 - ArtBeat is one of the area's largest and most innovative arts festivals, with over a dozen bands, dance troupes, 75 craft vendors, food, and "hatch-themed" activities. APRIL 5, 12, 19, 26 - Luminarium’s debut DANCE+ Series (Luminarium's 2014 Arts in Action Project) offered local residents an engaging, family-friendly class each Saturday in April at the Armory in Somerville, exploring weekly themes of dance intersecting other fields: Technology, Science, Music, and Light. Free and open to ages 3-12, these classes were extremely well-received, and were presented by Luminarium Dance Company and the Center for Arts at the Armory.

MYTHOS:PATHOS TOUR LAUNCH CONCORD MA

 

MARCH 20 - At the start of 2014, Luminarium offered schools and festivals the opportunity to showcase the company's popular 2012 production Mythos:Pathos—telling the stories of Greek mythology through dance. The local tour launched at Concord-Carlisle High School where students studying literature, mythology, and ancient Greek history were treated to a 40-minute version of the production followed by a Q&A that lasted an impressive 45 minutes discussing the works and the students' thoughts, sparked by merging arts and education.

 

 

THIRD LIFE CHOREOGRAPHERS SHOWCASE SOMERVILLE MA

 

FEBRUARY 28 - The Third Life Studio Choreographers Series in Union Square, Somerville, is a delight. Now a monthly Friday night event, it is the recent brainchild of choreographer/dance activist Kelley Donovan. Audience members can park across the street at Citizens Bank before searching for a casually painted door at 33 Union Square. Waiting in a tiny hallway for tickets, greeting other dance theatregoers, and watching the action from an intimate seating area are also part of the fun. Luminarium presented its work For You, I alongside six other local talented choreographers at the February 2014 performance.

Described by one critic as "a powerful play on poetry in motion and the mysteries hidden in the light and dark" (NE Theatre Geek), Secrets & Motion combines dance, light, and text to create a performance riddled with contemplative thought, and a little humor. Collaborating with photographer Larry Pratt and installation artist Hannah Verlin, Luminarium presented viewers with an evening deeply rooted in the secrets we keep, share, and dismantle.

JULY 18 - The company presented an early rendition of its new work Hush at the 15th Annual Forest Hills Lantern Festival, held on the cemetery grounds. NOVEMBER 29 - The culminating finale performance of the Mythos:Pathos project (which expanded over time, allowing audiences to view its progress from summer to late fall of 2012) was performed at American Repertory Theater's prestigious OBERON theater. The show utilized nontraditional lighting, while showcasing a contemporary take on Greek mythology.

OCTOBER - The company enjoyed an exciting roadtrip and dance adventure when it was invited to create a commissioned choreographic work alongside composer Justyne Griffin. Themed in feudal revolution, the new work was performed with a live chamber orchestra of 26 musicians in Ithaca’s beautiful Ford Hall.

Y.E.S. GREEN STREET STUDIOS

 

November 4 & 5 - Green Street Studios of Cambridge MA invited Luminarium to produce a two-night show in its theatre in Central Square. Luminarium was pleased to present its Year End Show ("Y.E.S.") at Green Street, in which the company presented new work performed at the Seacoast Fringe Festival four weeks earlier, as well as some of the Season's favorite choreography. A beautiful, humorous, and introspective two-night performance featuring the full company.

 

 

MEMENTO MORI MOBIUS, CAMBRIDGE MA

 

October 19 - 23 - Luminarium was selected to present two dance pieces and one artistic film at the Mobius Alternative Arts Space in its Memento Mori exhibit in late October. SEACOAST FRINGE FESTIVAL PORTSMOUTH NH

 

October 8 & 9 - Luminarium began the second half of its 2011 Season performing in this exciting Columbus Day Weekend festival. The company brought with it an hour-long show premiering two new pieces and revisiting the Season's strongest repertory. SPONSOR BENEFIT GALA AKA BISTRO, LINCOLN MA

 

June 26 - Over 50 sponsors, patrons, artists and community members joined us for our first Sponsor Benefit Gala: an evening of fine dining and the One Year Anniversary of Luminarium! Held at Lincoln's French and Japanese cuisine AKA Bistro, the night provided sponsors with the chance to mingle with Luminarium's choreographers and performers. Guests met the company, while enjoying live jazz, delicious hors-d'oeuvres and catching a glimpse of our year's work as we projected footage of our shows and events onto a central screen.

 

 

IN SYNC / SAMBANDH EASTHAMPTON MA

 

June 18 - A Japan Fundraiser. Luminarium was invited to perform with Nataraj Dancers to support those affected by the devastation in Japan. Japanese and Indian musicians came together with Nataraj Dancers and Luminarium Dance Company to perform in a celebration of dance, art and culture! June 18, 7:00pm at the Williston Theatre in the Williston Northampton School in Easthampton MA.

 

 

DANCE FOR WORLD COMMUNITY FESTIVAL CAMBRIDGE MA

 

June 11 - Luminarium was chosen to perform on the beautiful outdoor mainstage at Jose Mateo's Dance for World Community Festival. We also participated in Advocacy Way: a street devoted to dance-related information booths, where we spoke with viewers and dancers about our company and the Boston dance scene as a whole.

 

 

LEAP CAMBRIDGE MA

 

May 27 - In December of 2010, Luminarium received the President's Innovation Fund through the Boys & Girls Club of Boston. The company spent months working with students through a series of master classes, rehearsals and workshops on art, dance and choreography over the course of the semester. The 'Performing Arts Project' culminated in May with a performance at the Cambridge  Family YMCA Theatre. MHC COMMENCEMENT CONCERT SOUTH HADLEY MA

 

May 21 - In 2010, Luminarium received an honorarium to begin its 2011 Spring Tour by presenting its newest piece 'you have hands, too?' at Mount Holyoke College's Commencement Concert, commemorating present and past graduates of dance.

 

 

KICKSTARTER COUNTDOWN CAMBRIDGE MA

 

April 22 - Kickstarter Countdown & World Premiere! Donors and friends joined us to celebrate the last hours of our kickstarter campaign. Plus, as an added bonus...having surpassed our goal of $2,000, we presented our dance-on-camera film 'Everything But Blue.' It was an upbeat and exciting night as we ended our campaign.

 

 

MHC ARTS CAREER DAY SOUTH HADLEY MA

 

March 5 - Co-Founders Merli V. Guerra and Kimberleigh A. Holman were invited to speak at Mount Holyoke College's first Arts Career Day. Students were given the opportunity to hear alumnae speak about the possibilities of a career in the arts after college.
